First week: draw up a study plan

The goals I set myself for this is year are fine, but formulated a bit too broadly. Im lacking of the right method to reach them. A study plan so to say.

Since the 27th of December I spent every day, at least some minutes - sometimes even hours, some time with something chess related. Chessable was taking a lot of time, mainly for reviews of an opening but also to learn some new lines in a repertoire for black against 1. e4. And then the news reached out, that chessable finally became member in the circle of money grabbers (didn’t expect something else after the merge with chess dot com). Quite sad, actually, but maybe also lucky for me as by reading some posts in the chessable forum I felt myself a little set back to reality:

  • Spaced repetition is not everything!

  • Studying openings is not everything (especially if the lines you study nearly never show up on the board, at least in the range of my rating)!

  • Lichess has everything! Their studying tool is mighty!

  • I own too many chess books I never worked through or, to be honest, ever started.

  • Playing and analyzing is way more important than theory! (Is it?)

Concerning online games, everything is quite fine:

  • Since the 27th of December I played
  • only 14 games of blitz (and none so far in 2025!)
  • 7 classical games + analyzed them

The provisional study plan for the upcoming weeks looks like this:

  • more than 1 classical online game per week + analyze them
  • learn more about analyzing
  • going through a masters game once a week
  • finally really (!) starting to work myself through „reassess your chess“ (last attempt was 4 years ago and didn’t even reach * chapter 2)
  • keeping the chessable streak going. Less, but more concentrated and trying to get 100 % accuracy in repetitions and learn some new lines in openings. Step by step.
